Drag Queen Photo Exhibition

The world is a stage, and while some are content to perform on that stage in everyday attire, there are many who prefer something with a little more flair. That's where drag comes in.

For my ongoing series Killer Queens I have photographed about 40 artists from the Birmingham, England drag community. The project consists of two parts; a series of colorful studio portraits and on location documentary photos of the drag performers in clubs and the performances in progress. The studio portraits can be viewed exclusively during the exhibition at Fotoatelier BW5.

'Killer Queens' explores ideas about gender parody as an art form and a way of self-expression. For the drag artists I've worked with, this "playing with gender" is not seen as a caricature to insult the opposite sex, but is intended for entertainment and education. Drag offers a platform for diversity and a chance to be yourself and discover yourself. Drag offers an opportunity to form, represent and embody your own opinions.
