Paintings by Riet van der Lubbe with the theme: the identity of man in relation to his body (gallery)

Opening: Saturday, May 30, 17.00 p.m. by Rabin Baldewsingh, alderman for Social Affairs in The Hague
Run-out: Sunday, June 14, 16.00 p.m.

Riet van der Lubbe: 'The human body fascinates me. The perishable body, which is not the same for a day, but which also bears your identity. What makes man from flesh to man from flesh and blood? What makes the difference between one person and all the other nearly seven billion people. What is identity, what is his identity.'

Her work consists of images from newborns to the very elderly from different cultures. The exhibition includes a number of works, in which the transgender theme in particular comes to the fore. Van der Lubbe: 'transgender and intersex people themselves are often intensively searching for their own identity, specifically in relation to their own body'.

By isolating sections of the body and showing them enlarged, she expresses her fascination in a penetrating way. She represents the identity in body language. Beauty doesn't matter. Layering is an important aspect in her work: Riet van der Lubbe looks, as it were, in or under the skin. With this she wants to depict her investigation of the person in the body.
