Shortly after the summer recess, the Hague City Party submitted written questions to the city council to provide medical guidance for the use of PrEP (a drug that can prevent HIV infections) in The Hague. The written questions have now been answered and the Hague City Party is pleased with the response from the council.

The city council has promised that the Center for Sexual Health of the GGD Haaglanden will shortly inform, guide and monitor PrEP users.

This benefits individual PrEP users as well as general public health.

Why supervise PrEP use?
PrEP use without supervision can lead to kidney damage. If clients who already have an HIV infection start using PrEP without supervision, the virus can become resistant to the drug.

Councilor Fatima Faïd: 'We are pleased that the city council shares our opinion. It is undesirable for PrEP to be used without medical supervision. We hope that the Health Council will decide as soon as possible to reimburse the medicine. Until then, informal PrEP users can contact the Sexual Health Center.'
