On Friday March 18, 2016, the annual Movies that Matter Festival will kick off in Filmhuis Den Haag and Theater aan het Spui. At this international film and debate festival, directors from all over the world present impressive feature films and documentaries about human rights and a just, sustainable world.

Over 70 movies in 9 days!
The Movies that Matter Festival offers more than 9 films in 70 days and has two annually recurring main programs: A Matter of ACT about human rights defenders (in collaboration with Amnesty International), including festival favorite Sonita. And the Camera Justitia programme, supported by the vfonds, with feature films and documentaries about international law and legal dilemmas, including the Oscar-nominated opening film of the Krigen festival.

In addition, there are a number of new festival programs this year: Media that Matter, a multimedia program with true stories, told by people who experienced them themselves, Shorts that Matter, a selection of short films and Movies at Midnight in which human rights genre films with a show a wink. This year the festival will also feature themed programs on topics ranging from propaganda and Big Data to refugees and films about War & Peace. And for those who cannot choose from the range of approximately 70 films, there is the Best of Day.

Talk shows, interviews and debates take place every day in which guests from home and abroad discuss themes from the films with each other and the public. There will be music performances, a photo exhibition, a symposium, the festive A Matter of ACT Night and the moves that matter party on Saturday 26 March.

Gender & gay equality at MTM festival

Every year they are on the menu of the festival programme: there is still a lot to improve on in terms of women's rights and the rights of LGBTI people. On Mon 21 March at 21.00 pm VARA presenter will talk Elena Lindemans in the Daily Matters Talkshow with Nanfu Wang, director of Hooligan sparrow on women's rights in China and with and Alex Bakker, co-producer, scriptwriter of TransitHavana about how transgenders are doing in Cuba. There is also a musical intermezzo and a performance by a spoken word artist.

The following films have been selected around this theme: A Sinner in Mecca, Transit Havana, Paradise, Hooligan Sparrow and Saudi Arabia: A Wind of Change.
