THE HAGUE - The International Gay Monument in The Hague has been given a new prominent place since Sunday. The striking work of art can now be admired at the Koekamp.

The festive 're-unveiling' of the monument was performed by the mayor of The Hague Jozias van Aartsen, D66 member Kim Waanders, VVD member Arjen Lakerveld and chairman Arnout van Kooij of the gay interest association COC Haaglanden.

The gay monument was previously located near the public toilets at the turning loop for Madurodam. The COC was asked to give the monument a more respectful place. The gay interest association received support from D66 and VVD in the Hague city council.

Symbolism

The Homomonument in The Hague is a metal sculpture of a ribbon. The ribbon is knotted halfway and has three colors that merge into each other: blue, green and pink.

The shape and color of the monument are symbolic of a self-confident homosexual life. The blue is the basis for awareness, green is the color of society, the knots in it symbolize the conflicts and the rising pink stands for liberation.
