Movie: Der Kreis

Der Kreis is the title of a 2014 cinema film by Swiss director Stefan Haupt. The film premiered on February 10, 2014 at the Berlin International Film Festival. Set in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the film is about the decline of the Zurich gay organization and the magazine Der Kreis of the same name. The organization campaigned for the rights of homosexuals from 1943 to 1967. The story focuses on the love story between Ernst Ostertag and Röbi Rapp, who met during the repression of homosexuals in Zurich and fell in love. The film is complemented by conversations with the real Ernst Ostertag and Röbi Rapp.

The roles are divided among the actors Marianne Sägebrecht, Anatole Taubman, Antoine Monot Jr., Stefan Witschi, Peter Jecklin, Marie Leuenberger and Markus Merz. Zurich, late 1950s: The young, shy teacher Ernst Ostertag joins the Swiss gay movement Der Kreis. There he meets the transvestite Röbi Rapp and falls deeply in love. Röbi and Ernst experience the heyday and fall of the organization, which is regarded throughout Europe as a pioneer in the field of gay emancipation. Ernst has to choose between his civil life as a teacher at a girls' school and his open homosexuality. For Röbi, it is about the first serious romantic relationship, a love that will last a lifetime.
