The Hague – March 16, 2019: Just before XNUMX:XNUMX AM, the first politicians poured into the COC Café on Scheveningseveer in The Hague. They are coming to sign the very first Rainbow Ballot Box Agreement in the Netherlands. Party leaders, pink candidates, a few visitors to the COC and the initiators of the agreement make for good company.
At the back of the COC building are high tables with a rainbow flag over them. It contains three copies of the Rainbow Ballot Box Agreement, because: “There are three COCs in South Holland and all three want to take home an agreement,” said Ingmar, secretary of COC Rotterdam Rijnmond, who gave the welcome speech.
COC Haaglanden, COC Leiden and COC Rotterdam Rijnmond are extremely proud of the result; what started with the idea of working together led to a major debate and now a widely supported ballot box agreement, signed by VVD, D66, CDA, Labor Party, SP, GroenLinks, Party for the Animals, 50PLUS and Code Orange.
The politicians sign the three agreements one by one and after signing they explain why they think this is so important. “It is time for concrete policy and action from the Province” is the most prominent. From left to right, those present agree that the Province of South Holland can do more for LGBTI people (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders and intersex people) than some people initially think. As legislator and employer, the Province must prioritize inclusion.
After the photo session, the three COCs invite everyone for a drink, because a result like this should be celebrated. It is the festive conclusion of a great collaboration and it leaves us wanting more. South Holland is the first province where a Rainbow Ballot Box Agreement has been signed.
