gay icon Lady Gaga is a great example for gays and lesbians in Cameroon, but the tolerance that the pop star sings about in her hit song of the same name is still only a dream for them.

For young gays in Cameroon, pop idols like Rihanna and Lady Gaga are no less popular than in the West. But the tolerance towards gays that Gaga in Born this way is just a fantasy for people like Cedric and Gertrude. They are gay and live in Cameroon, where their sexual orientation is considered a crime.
The big city offers only limited security or anonymity. Yet for many gays and lesbians it is the only refuge. Coming out is a big taboo, completely against one's own family. Cedric and Gertrude are committed to the Alternatives Cameroon, a grassroots organization that stands up for the rights of the LGBT community.
The film also shows the work of human rights lawyer Alice Nkom. She has been fighting for a better position for homosexuals in Cameroon for years and was a guest at the Movies that Matter Festival in 2011. Despite the danger and discrimination, gays and lesbians do not give up: wherever and whenever they can, they show their true colors and enjoy the little moments when they can really be themselves.
