Gay, Bi, Lesbian or Transgender? Then the Hojokamp is for you!

“I expected stereotypical gay people. You know, the one with pink handbags.” Says Roy (17). Roy is one of the participants of the 2013 Hojo Camp. “Even I was prejudiced, but I soon noticed that it wasn't necessary. The people are chill and I'm having a good time.” The Hojo camp has nothing to do with the practice of homosexuality. This is even out of the question during the camp. “Homosexuality is quickly becoming related to orgies and everything else that has to do with sex. And that is nonsense” says Roy who already at 16e openly revealed his sexuality. “This is mainly about fun, fun and relaxation”.

But in addition, various workshops are held in which the participants discuss with each other or are presented with a mirror. “I was very lucky with my environment when I came out. My family and friends have welcomed me with open arms,” says Roy. “I have spoken to other participants and realize that not everyone is lucky enough to be accepted as they are. That was an eye-opener for me.”

The Hojo camp is intended to allow the participants to enjoy their sexual identity in freedom. At the Hojo camp they temporarily live on a “pink cloud”. Everyone can be completely themselves here. “Young people come to the camp who are still searching and who have doubts about their sexuality. But you can also find young people who have not yet come out at the camp.” says Barry Lamers (36) Coordinator of the Hojo camp. “During the week we take the young people on a journey to themselves. We let them experience what it is like to really be themselves here.”

The Hojokamp will be held for the 12th this yeare organized once and many hundreds of young people aged up to 25 have participated over the years. “Also the mr. Gay from a few years ago was once a participant in the Hojo camp.” Lamers knows how to tell. Preparations for the camp, which will be held from 3 to 8 August, are already in full swing. “We have a team of enthusiastic volunteers with whom we organize the camp.”

There are still places to join the Hojokamp this summer. If you are interested in this, go to the website: www.hojokamp.nl, there you can find more information and you can register yourself.
