Coming out day is now also being picked up by the municipality of The Hague. Alderman Rabin Baldewsingh will raise the Rainbow flag for the first time on 11 October, Coming Out Day, at 09:00 am at the Hofvijver (on the far side, opposite the Gevangenenpoort). COC Haaglanden calls on its members and sympathizers to be present and thus contribute to that moment!

The Hague trams get rainbow flag

On 11 October 2013, all HTM trams in the Hague region will be flying around with a rainbow flag on the occasion of Coming Out Day. HTM is hereby responding to a request from COC Haaglanden.

On the annual Coming Out Day, attention is paid to the coming out, in other words the moment when a gay, lesbian or bisexual for the first time openly declares his or her sexual preference. The day has been held in the United States since 1988 and also in the Netherlands since 2009. In that year, the then Minister of Education, Culture and Science Ronald Plasterk proclaimed 11 October National Coming-Out Day in order to promote the social acceptance of gays and lesbians.

Chairman Harry Derksen of COC Haaglanden: “Coming out day is about acceptance, but also about visibility. And what better way to get that message across in all parts of the city and the suburbs than with a rainbow flag on all trams? With this, HTM shows itself as a company where all travelers and employees are welcome, regardless of their sexual orientation.”

During Coming Out Day, activities are organized in many municipalities in the Netherlands by or together with the regional COC.
