THE HAGUE – In one sport it is not an issue to be openly lesbian, bisexual or transgender (LBT). And that is very difficult in other sports. Platform DARE invites interested parties to come and listen to guest speakers on Saturday October 31 who talk about acceptance in the sports world. The evening starts at 19.00 p.m. with a sports café and debate in grand café Haagsche Bluf. From 21.00 p.m. it turns into a dazzling women's party.

Although it is not an issue in some sports to be LBT, at least 6% of lesbian athletes sometimes have to deal with homosexual treatment. A quarter are more or less used to 'gay', 'pot' or 'sissy' being used as a term of abuse. Especially in team sports. If there is physical contact between the players and there is a joint change of clothes and showers, coming out is sometimes more difficult. Some LBT women (and gay men) like to exercise but are afraid to feel excluded for fear of feeling excluded.

Guests
'It is strange that we find homosexuality normal in our family and friends, but that there is a kind of cramp around it in the canteen and changing rooms. Exclusion of gays is no longer of this time.' That says Karin Nederpelt-Blankenstein, sister of the now deceased, first openly gay football referee John Blankenstein. Karin is currently the head of the John Blankenstein Foundation and is present at the discussion evening. Other guests are football player Maria van Omme, Renate den Heijer of the gay ADO fan club Haagse Roze Règâhs and Diana van den Born, chairman of Gay Union Through Sports (GUTS), formerly Stichting Homosport Nederland.

“We like to be informed by the guest speakers about the current state of affairs,” says Susan Kemerink of DARE, the women's platform within COC Haaglanden. DARE is committed to emancipation and acceptance and offers a place to meet, exchange experiences, share stories and relax. “There is the DARE Ladies Table where people eat together, the Dare2Talk discussion group, there are parties and once a year a larger event.” This year it is the sports café with discussion and party.
