Today is International Transgender Day of Remembrance, better known as Transgender Day of Remembrance. This day has been held since 1998 and falls on November 20 every year. On Transgender Remembrance Day, all victims of transphobic violence are commemorated and attention is paid to the violence that transgender people regularly experience.

The memorial day arises from the online project Remembering Our Dead. This was set up by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, an American trans activist, following the murder of Rita Hester. She was murdered on November 28, 1998 in the US state of Massachusetts. The following Friday, a candle vigil was held with more than 250 participants.

This Saturday an event will be organized in Nijmegen in honor of Transgender Remembrance Day. This event is organized by Transgendergroep Nijmegen, COC Nijmegen and Transgender Netwerk Nederland and supported by the municipality of Nijmegen. There will be lectures, a silent march and a memorial service, among other things. More information can be found on the website of Transgender Remembrance Day 2013.
