Today marks 54 years since the outbreak of the Stonewall Riots. This uprising was what inspired other protests for LGBTQIA+ rights worldwide, and this day is therefore also known as “world pride day”. It is also because of these riots that the month of June is now known as 'pride month' and also the reason that Pink Saturday in the Netherlands takes place towards the end of June every year.

Pride is a protest against inequality, where being visibly yourself can certainly be celebrated, but where attention is first and foremost asked for our rights. The events of last Monday – the defacement of the rainbow bench at Huigenspark in The Hague and the vandalism of a work of art in Delft – show why it is still necessary.

The acquired LGBTQIA+ rights are under pressure and progress towards equality has come to a standstill. Speak up, stand up, and join in!
